Behind the pattern: our Easter bunny

Every year around February, the studio turns into a bunny factory. This is the story of how one of our bestselling patterns went from sketch to finished PDF — and why the ears took four tries.

The sketch

Our brief was simple: a bunny small enough to fit inside an Easter basket, with a face soft enough that a three-year-old would want to sleep with it. The first sketches leaned too cartoonish. We softened the muzzle, dropped the eyes lower, and lengthened the ears.

The prototype (and the ears)

The first prototype's ears flopped in a sad, uncooked-pasta way. We tried a stiffer cotton — too rigid. We tried a wire insert — too spooky. In the end, a simple change to the increase pattern in the ear base gave them the right shape without any tricks.

This is the boring truth of pattern design: it's almost never about the fancy technique. It's about testing eight versions of the same ear.

The photoshoot

We shot the final bunny on cream linen with dried flowers, in the late afternoon window light of the studio. No fancy lighting rig — just north-facing daylight and a lot of patience.
